BRC was first published in 1998 by the British Retailer Consortium (BRC) as the BRC Food Technical Standard. The standard is being adopted by food suppliers around the world, particularly organizations that provide products to UK retailers.

For your business to be certified by BRC, you must design a business with a set of rules created by that organization. At this point, our company offers engineering solutions that will bring you to these standards in accordance with the training and experience it has received.

The BRC Global Food Standard is designed for sellers who supply food products to British retailers regardless of product or country of origin. According to the standard, documentation helps manufacturers, brand owners and retailers meet their own legal obligations, while ultimately protecting the consumer (BRC document).

Benefits of BRC:

Thanks to the implementation of the BRC /IoP standard, many benefits can be provided, including those listed below:

  • It provides a certain privilege within the industry to be evaluated and documented by an accredited third-party certification institution.
  • Common measurement and evaluation criteria for both manufacturers and suppliers help food retailers and other organizations within the supply chain make assessments.
  • The standard covers quality, hygiene and product safety issues in detail, so there is no need for any other certification services.
  • The company, which is documented by following the inspections and the resulting corrective activities, has established an ever evolving and developing quality, hygiene and product safety system.

BRC - Food Standard

In order to ensure the minimum hygiene standard in food production facilities, BRC published the "BRC - Food Standard" with major British retailers. In order to meet this standard, the food industry (suppliers) must adapt to six basic criteria management systems. The standard consists of; HACCP System, Quality Management System, Plant Environmental Standards, Product Control, Process Control, Personnel departments. The BRC Food Standard categorized food processing and reviewed and published it under 6 headings. When applying for certification, companies should review these categories and apply through the category that is appropriate for them.

  1. Raw meat and fish products (Red and white meat-fish, unprocessed meat and fish products),
  2. Production (Fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables),
  3. Daily Foods (milk and dairy products, eggs),
  4. Frozen cooked, ready to eat or cook meat and fish products,
  5. Environment resistant, heat-protected, packaged food products,
  6. Other food products that are resistant to the conditions of the environment (beverages, bakery products, dried foods, light food products and breakfast cereals, liquids and fats, food additives).

Principles of the standard

  • Minimizing the repetition of the evaluation,
  • To ensure transparency and compliance with honest trade legislation,
  • To constantly review and improve standards and support processes,
  • Disseminate best practices.

These requirements include the main elements of ISO 9001:2008 standard. If ISO 9001:2008 certification is awarded to the company, the work required to implement the BRC/IoP Packaging Standard will be minimized.
